The Boatman and Saint Nicholas
On the Meuse near Flémalle, where waters flowed through narrow stone passages, an old and pious boatman ferried his ships and goods across the river. His name was Pieter, and he was renowned for his safe voyages and his steadfast faith in Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. On a night of frost and darkness, his faith would be tested most terribly, and a miracle would save him and his men.
1 The Storm on the Meuse
Pieter had ferried ships and goods across the Meuse for thirty years. He was a pious man who prayed every morning to Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of travelers and sailors. His boat was sturdy and his heart full of faith. On a cold winter night, when no moon shone, a terrible storm gathered above the waters of Chokier.
2 The Miracle Upon the Water
The waves swelled into mountains of water that tossed Pieter’s boat to and fro like a reed. His men screamed in terror and the sails ripped to shreds. In his desperation, Pieter cried loudly for Saint Nicholas, his voice lost in the howling wind. Then suddenly, a figure appeared in episcopal robes, working among the masts, calming the waves. The face of the saint shone with golden light.
3 The Saint’s Grace
In the blink of an eye, the storm fell silent and the figure vanished into the mist. Pieter and his men sailed safely to shore. From that day on, Pieter built a small chapel in honor of Saint Nicholas upon the banks of the Meuse, and every boatman who passed brought an offering. His tale spread far and wide, and still today people sail carefully past Chokier, in reverence for the saint.
