The Bewitched Baby of Bevingen
In Bevingen, a village near Sint-Truiden, a woman had a baby she would place outside in a pram in fine weather. When the child suddenly fell ill, no doctor could help.
The neighbours whispered that the evil eye was behind it, and the mother set out to find a miraculous cure.
1 The Sick Child
A woman from Bevingen had a baby whom she placed outside in a pram in fine weather. Suddenly the child began to develop health problems. The doctor tried all manner of things, but nothing helped.
After half a year the doctor refused to come any longer. The child grew sicker and sicker, and the mother was beside herself with grief.
2 The Evil Eye
The neighbours had already told the woman that the evil eye might have something to do with it. They advised her not to place the child outside in fine weather any more. They also sent her to a man who lived at the Spanish Bridge.
This man told the woman she must hold a novena and pray to the Three Sisters. The child improved somewhat, but soon relapsed.
3 The Miraculous Healing
Some time later a procession was held in the village. The woman decided to join it, carrying the child in her arms. She stayed as close as possible to the Holy Sacrament the entire time.
After the procession the child was cured for good. The woman was convinced that the nearness of the Holy Sacrament had broken the evil eye. The child grew up healthy in Bevingen from then on, and the mother told her story to all who would listen.
