The Legend of Saint Gudula

In the early Middle Ages, when Brussels was merely a small settlement on the river Senne, there lived a young girl named Gudula. She came from a noble family, but renounced worldly life early to devote herself entirely to God.

With the first break of day, before the first light touched the sky, Gudula would leave her parents’ home. Step by step, murmuring prayers, she walked to the chapel where she spent her daily devotions.

To illuminate the dark paths, she always carried a lantern, whose bright flame served as her guide through the night. This light symbolized her unwavering faith and her love for God.

The devil saw this piety and was seized with rage. This girl, so obedient and full of love, he could not bear. He devised various schemes, hoping to lead her astray from her path.

But the first thing the devil attempted was to extinguish her lantern. As Gudula traversed the dark streets of Brussels, a cursed creature appeared in the sky. With mighty gusts of wind, it tried to snuff out her flame.

The lantern flickered and wavered, as though it might be extinguished at any moment. Yet each time the light threatened to go out, it rekindled itself in full brilliance, as though by an invisible hand.

Night after night, this miracle repeated itself. The devil tried countless times to overcome the flame, with relentless force. He sent icy winds, summoned rain, and dispatched dark shadows to smother the light.

But Gudula’s faith was stronger than any evil. Her lantern burned, incomparable and eternal, as a symbol of God’s protection. Each day she walked the same path, and each day the light guided her safely to the chapel.

The people of Brussels witnessed this miracle and became convinced that Saint Gudula was protected by God himself. Many joined her in prayer and felt strengthened in their faith.

When Saint Gudula reached her grey years, she had already undertaken her daily journey for decades. Her name had become legend, whispered in churches and market squares throughout the city.

After her death, she was canonized and crowned patron saint of Brussels. The Cathedral of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula was built on the very spot where she had spent countless hours in prayer.

To this day, Saint Gudula with her lantern remains a symbol of light in darkness, of steadfastness against evil, and of God’s infinite merciful protection. Brussels carries her name forward as a legacy of hope and holiness.
