In the heart of Bruges lies a lake of bewitching beauty, surrounded by lush greenery and ancient bridges. The Minnewater — the Lake of Love — is not merely a natural pond. It is the legacy of a great and tragic love, engraved deeper into this city’s history than many a written chronicle. This is the story of Minna and Stromberg, two souls called to one another by fate, yet divided by worldly walls.

1 The Daughter of the Nobleman

In the golden age of Bruges, when the city flourished and its towers touched the heavens, there lived a wealthy patrician with his daughter Minna. She was the jewel of his house, beautiful of face and gentle of heart. Her eyes sparkled like stars, and her voice was as the singing of the nightingale. All the nobles of Flanders desired her hand, yet Minna heeded none of their pleas.

Yet one autumn day, a warrior appeared at court — named Stromberg — a man of noble birth, but without inheritance, without lands. He was quiet, thoughtful, and possessed a deeper beauty than mere material wealth. Minna saw him, and her heart was captured like a bird in a golden cage. They gazed upon each other across her father’s hall, and in that moment, a spring of love was opened that could not be sealed.

But Minna’s father harbored other designs. He was a man of power and possession, and he saw in Stromberg only a poor knight without future. Without hesitation or mercy, he declared that his daughter would marry a wealthy count from the North — a man twice her age, with a heart of stone. The father’s word was law, and against his will, even love could not prevail.

2 The Flight into Night

On the night before her arranged marriage, Minna sought refuge in the forest that surrounded Bruges. Stromberg waited for her in a remote place, and together they fled into darkness, hoping to leave the cursed city behind forever. Their hearts beat in synchronized rhythm, filled with hope for a life of freedom together.

But fate is a cruel instrument. The forests were vast and inhospitable. Minna, raised in luxury and comfort, was not made for arduous nocturnal journeys. Her feet became wounded, her breath grew weak. Stromberg carried her as far as he could, but winter approached and cold gnawed at their strength. Time and again he had to rest, while Minna’s body grew ever more frail beneath the weight of impossible trials.

After three days and three nights of relentless wandering in bitter cold and hunger, they stumbled upon a small stream that wound through the forest. Minna could go no further. Her body, exhausted and soaked, collapsed under the burden of the impossible. She caressed Stromberg’s face one last time and whispered “I love you” before her eyes closed and she would wake no more.

3 The Lake of Love

Stromberg sat there in the night, his beloved’s lifeless hand in his own, and a cry escaped his lips that made the stars weep. With bare hands and the last of his strength, he undertook a task that would drive him to madness: he built a dam of branches, stones, and earth, forcing the stream to dam and swell. Day after day he labored without rest, driven by nothing but grief and love.

Slowly, ever so slowly, a body of water accumulated where once there had been only a murmuring brook. Stromberg buried Minna’s body in the soft sand of the shore, and as waves of anguish crashed through his heart, he whispered words of comfort that would never be heard. “Here you will rest forever,” he said. “Here you will be protected by water and love, and no evil shall ever reach you again.”

When the dam was complete and the water stretched mirror-smooth before him, Stromberg stepped into the lake one last time — not as a living man, but as a broken soul following his beloved into whatever lies beyond. And thus was the Minnewater born from sorrow, from love, and from tragic surrender, a monument greater than marble or gold.

4 An Eternal Blessing

Years later, hunters and woodcutters discovered the mysterious lake that had formed in the midst of the forest. It was slowly woven into the fabric of Bruges, and its name — the Minnewater — spread through the city like a whisper of hope. For soon the citizens noticed something remarkable: couples who walked together across the bridges spanning the lake seemed touched by a secret blessing.

Their love grew stronger and deeper. Their devotion became unshakeable. Children born of love sealed at the Minnewater grew to know deep, abiding love themselves. The lake became a place of pilgrimage for loving hearts, and the legend spread like ripples on water: whoever walks across the bridge together will find eternal love. Whoever gives their heart to another there will always be found.

Today the Minnewater still stands in the heart of Bruges, as enchanting as centuries ago. The bridges gleam in sunlight, and the willows bend gracefully over the water. In its reflection you see not only your own face, but also the shadows of Minna and Stromberg, still holding one another in the quiet, deepest part of the lake, where love knows no death.
