The Ghost of the Beguinage

In medieval times, there lived in the beguinage a young beguine named Marieke. She was deeply devoted to the religious customs and communal structure of their life. However, Marieke fell in love with a young man from the town, which was strictly forbidden. Her parents and the authorities of the beguinage discovered her secret meetings and punished her severely. Out of guilt and sorrow, Marieke took her own life in her cell, and since then, her spirit has haunted the beguinage.

The first appearances occurred at night in the chapel. Nuns saw a white figure gliding slowly between the pews, and an icy chill spread throughout the space. Candlelight flickered without any breath of wind. In the following weeks, the stories spread like wildfire through the town. Priests were called upon to exorcise the ghost, but their rituals proved fruitless.

As years passed, the haunting gradually faded, but the local population never forgot Marieke’s legend. To this day, older residents of Zoutleeuw whisper that on certain nights, especially when the moon is full, a white figure can be seen floating through the beguinage. Some say you can hear her sighing, as though eternally mourning her lost love.

The beguinage of Zoutleeuw is now protected as a heritage site, and many visitors feel an unexplainable tension and melancholy when walking through its ancient walls. Perhaps Marieke’s ghost is still present, beyond the boundaries of the afterlife, eternally waiting for forgiveness.
