Near the hamlet of Planchipont, autumn falls slowly over the ancient forests of the Parc naturel Haute-Sûre. The trees, soaked with rain and mystery, jealously guard their secrets. Deep within this wild nature lives a legendary creature: an old wild boar — enormous, scarred, marked by decades of existence. His body bears the scars of a thousand battles, and his eyes shine with an intelligence that no man can ignore.

1 The Boar That Defies

Every hunter in the valley knows him. For decades, this creature has eluded their rifles, their dogs, their determination. Some say he is immortal; others whisper that he possesses superhuman wisdom that allows him to foresee every trap. His coat, once black as coal, has turned grey, mottled like ancient slate. His tusks, yellow and ridged, tell stories that only an old animal can know.

The legends grow with time. They say the boar plunged a young man into a river to punish him for killing his family. They also say he guards the forests for the spirits of the ancients, that he is the last living memory of a bygone era. But no one truly knows where this creature comes from, or why it refuses to die.

2 Léon’s Obsession

A young hunter named Léon arrives from the neighbouring village with a reputation to make. He is strong, skilled, blessed with deadly precision. But no one — absolutely no one — asked him to hunt the boar. It is he who decides that killing this beast will be his trial, his passage into adulthood, his proof of courage.

He spends weeks studying the boar’s tracks, learning its ways, its secrets. Léon ventures deep into the forest, almost forgetting the outside world. The arboretum becomes his true home, more than any village. And each day, his determination grows. He already sees himself triumphant, bringing the creature’s carcass through the hamlet, acclaimed by all.

3 The Encounter

At last, after endless days of tracking, Léon sees him. The animal is there, at the edge of a damp clearing, rooting the earth with his massive hooves. The boar is even larger than the legends described. His body radiates a majestic and ancient presence. Léon slowly raises his rifle, his hands trembling. He has waited for this moment for so long.

But the boar turns then, as if it always knew the young man was there. And their eyes meet. In this gaze — deep, patient, without fear — Léon does not see a beast. He sees a soul. He sees an intelligence that transcends words, wisdom accumulated by decades of existence. The boar does not charge. He does not flee either. He simply stands there, observing, waiting for the fate Léon will choose.

4 The Choice

Léon feels his finger tighten on the trigger. His entire body screams to shoot — that is why he came. That is why he endured the rains, the hunger, the solitude. But something in him hesitates. Something rebels against the idea of spilling the blood of this creature. And in that moment of doubt — that infinitely long moment — Léon understands something the other hunters never knew. True strength is not to kill. True strength is to have the power to kill and choose life instead.

He lowers his rifle. Slowly, gently, like a prayer. The boar then turns and walks into the forest without haste, without fear. And in this elegant departure, Léon knows the beast always knew. It knew this young man would ultimately choose wisdom. It knew he would not shoot. And that is the true mystery of trust — it is when the other believes in you more than you believe in yourself.
