The Hanged Man’s Rock

In earlier times there lived a farmer named Joseph near Corbion. He was a diligent man who worked hard for his family and his cattle. But Joseph had one great weakness: the love of gambling. Every Wednesday market in Bouillon drew him like a magnet.

On a fateful summer day, Joseph lost everything—the proceeds of his cows, his whole year’s work sold to speculators. He returned home with empty pockets and a broken heart. In despair, that night he climbed to the highest rock above the Semois and let himself fall.

Since that night, Joseph’s spirit is seen on the rock in the summer months. Merchants and gamblers travelling to Bouillon feel a cold gust of wind as they pass this place. Some say they heard Joseph’s voice warning against the game.

The spirit is not cruel or evil—on the contrary, he tries to save others from the same fate. Many men who felt his warning gave up their gambling plans and returned home safely. Joseph’s tragic end became a protective force.

Even today there are stories of travellers passing the Hanged Man’s Rock who experience strange things—a sudden chill, unclear whispers, or even a hand pushing them away from the edge.

The place is forever marked by tragedy, but also by hope. Joseph’s spirit reminds us that addiction leads to destruction, and that there are always hands—even from beyond death—that want to protect us before it is too late.
