The Phantom of Brussegem
In Brussegem, a sub-municipality of Merchtem, on certain nights a ghost appears whose true nature nobody knows.
1 The Nocturnal Visitor
Every year on the same night, a white figure appeared in Brussegem that walked through the streets. The ghost made no sound but passed by the houses as if searching for something. Inhabitants locked their doors and windows, for everyone knew the appearance of the ghost foretold something - usually misfortune.
2 The Discovery
After years of investigation, the local priest discovered in old documents that the ghost was probably a woman who had been expelled from the village centuries ago. She was wrongly accused and had taken her own life in despair. Her soul could not rest because her name had not been cleared.
3 The Reconciliation
The priest organized a solemn mass and symbolically reopened the case in the village. He declared her innocence before all ears and performed the last sacraments. Since then the ghost has not returned. People say the spirit has finally found peace and watches over the village.
