The Haunted House and the Card Reader

A woman who lived near Tongeren was terrified because strange things were happening in her house. The door kept opening by itself, even when it had been locked properly. At night she heard strange sounds from the attic, as though someone were pacing back and forth. And beneath the stove the wallpaper was constantly being torn from the wall by an invisible hand.

The woman hardly dared stay in her own home. Her brother advised her to visit a card reader in Tongeren who was known for her gift.

The card reader received the woman in a small room and asked her to draw twenty-one cards from the deck. The woman did as she was told. The card reader studied the cards carefully and spoke: “Your house is haunted. Have you perhaps had a death in the family recently?”

The woman nodded in shock. Indeed, her mother had died not long ago. The card reader explained that the mother had likely made a promise she had not been able to keep. Her spirit could find no rest as long as that promise remained unfulfilled.

The card reader advised the woman to say an Our Father at Saint Anthony’s in Tongeren for the soul of her mother. The woman went to the church that very day and prayed the prayer with all her heart.

Since then, the house has not been haunted. The door stayed shut, the sounds from the attic vanished, and the wallpaper remained on the wall. Her mother’s spirit had finally found rest. The card reader of Tongeren had saved the woman with nothing more than a deck of cards and a simple prayer.
