The Giant’s Tomb

In ages past, when the world was young, giants walked the earth. Not the brutish, wild creatures of some tales, but wise and powerful beings who shaped nature according to their will. In the Semois valley dwelt a giant named Belgrand, a creature of immeasurable size whose shoulders brushed the clouds. He was ancient when the first men of Gaul moved northward, and he had sworn to guard the mountain passes of the Ardennes against all evil.

Belgrand was a silent watcher, powerful and careful, who stood vigil at the highest peaks. He saw what men could not see, heard what they could not hear. For countless generations, he kept the boundary between the world of mortals and the realm of spirits.

But all things must end, even the wisdom of giants. After thousands of years, Belgrand felt weariness creeping into his bones, felt his days drawing to a close. He knew his time had come. So he carried his massive form to the most wondrous place in all the valley: the bend of the Semois that curved like a graceful loop. There, upon a bed of stone, he lay himself down.

"Here I shall rest," said the giant, his voice like an earthquake, "and with my body I shall guard this valley for all time. My form shall become a tomb, and this tomb shall be forever the place where earth and sky meet. Those who stand here shall find strength, and those who pass shall receive protection."

And so it came to pass that the giant Belgrand took on his stone form, his body transforming into rock and earth. The great loop of the Semois, curved like an ear, is now the Giant’s Tomb—proof of his final act, a blessing that endures forever.

To this very day, when travelers climb the Tombeau du Géant and stand at the viewpoint, they feel it—a strange sensation of protection and strength, as if unseen hands hold them fast. And in the quiet hours of dusk, when mist rises from the valley below, some glimpse a gigantic form within the stone, still watching, still protecting. The giant sleeps, but he keeps eternal watch.
