Uilenspiegel and the Magical Hat
Uilenspiegel decided to play a trick on two merchants. After arranging something with a cafe owner, he went to the cafe with the men. After the men had drunk, Uilenspiegel took off his hat and said: "The hat has paid for everything". The cafe owner agreed.
1 The Magical Hat
When Uilenspiegel played the same trick a second time, the merchants desperately wanted that hat. Uilenspiegel sold his hat for a large sum of money. When he got home, he told his mother what had happened.
2 The Return
Suddenly, the mother saw the two merchants approaching, and Uilenspiegel said: "Quick, get a sheet and we’ll pretend I’m dead!" The trickster lay down under the sheet on the table and his mother wept: "Oh, now my poor boy is dead." The merchants paid no attention to the woman’s grief, and one of them wanted to punish the trickster. However, Uilenspiegel was prepared and bit the man on the backside. Screaming in pain, the man jumped up.
