1 The Miller’s Infidelity
A miller who had made his maid pregnant promised to marry her. Because the maid had no money, she was cast out at the end of her pregnancy. Instead, the miller married a wealthy miller’s daughter from Mechelen.
2 The Curse in the Church
During the wedding ceremony, the maid came into the church with her child and spoke to the miller: “You will never be happy. You and your whole family will suffer misfortune.” This tragic moment would forever change the miller’s life.
3 The First Blow of Misfortune
Everything the maid had predicted came true. The miller and his wife had three children; two boys and a girl. When the miller started his mill one Sunday morning, the child’s scarf caught on the mill wheels and the child was strangled. The miller rushed his child to the doctor, but it was too late.
4 The Tragic End
After this tragic event, the miller’s wife helped him with his work until their other son was old enough to help. The miller’s wife died of cancer and the miller himself died young. The curse of the abandoned maid had spread over the entire family.
