Blessed Mechelen and the Bear Children

In a harsh winter, when hunger and sickness plagued Mechelen, a tragedy unfolded in the narrow streets of the city. Two young children, a brother and sister barely seven and nine years old, became separated from their parents in the crowded marketplace. Whether they wandered astray or were confused by hunger, no one would ever know for certain.

The children walked aimlessly onward, past the city walls, into the snow. The forests surrounding Mechelen were dark and dense, full of dangers for such young travelers. Their footprints in the snow slowly became invisible. In the city, despair grew when it was discovered that the children had vanished. Everyone searched, but winter was cruel and the forests merciless. After several days, people gave them up for dead.

But the children were not dead. Exhausted and freezing, they had stumbled upon a mountainside where they discovered a cave. In that cave lived a mother bear with her three cubs. The animals could have torn the children apart, but fate had decided otherwise. The mother bear, seeing the desperation in the eyes of the small humans, felt compassion.

Instead of attacking them, she took them beneath her warm, heavy body. The bear cubs curled around the children, their warm bodies pressed against each other. Nights filled with frost became nights filled with warmth. The mother bear ensured they did not starve — fruits from her winter stores were shared with them, and her warm fur gave them life again. Weeks passed in that sheltered cave, where two human children and three bear cubs lived as brothers and sisters.

One day, a woodcutter from the forests discovered the cave and saw something impossible: two rosy-cheeked children sleeping peacefully between three playful bear cubs, all safe and content. He ran back to Mechelen and told his story to the burgomasters and priests. Many didn’t believe him at first, but when they found the cave and separated the children from the bears, all knew that God had spoken.

The entire city poured out to the gate where the children returned. "Blessed Mechelen!" cried the people, "Blessed Mechelen!" — blessed by God’s grace and by the creatures of the forest. In gratitude, the city decided to feed and protect the bears forever. They established the bear pit, where the animals would live as symbols of God’s blessing. To this day, Mechelen carries the bears in its heart and in its coat of arms.
