The Black Hand of Hasselt
In the heart of Hasselt, directly across from the parish church, stood an ancient farmhouse with heavy oak beams and a dark secret. The house was home to Mister P. Harie and his family, yet no inhabitant could find peace there for more than a few weeks. For this house was haunted—persistently, violently, and with a force no mortal could resist. The parish priest would eventually be called upon to confront the supernatural being that dwelled within.
1 The Nightly Terror
The old oak farmhouse across from Hasselt’s church had always carried a grim reputation, but when Mister Harie moved in with his family, the disturbances intensified. On the very first night, they heard footsteps in the attic—heavy, methodical steps that left no trace. By the third night, cupboards opened of their own accord. Glasses shattered without warning, and the children woke screaming from their beds in terror.
Weeks passed. The spirit seemed insatiable, drawing ever more energy from the family’s mounting dread. Doors slammed shut behind them with invisible force, locks of hair disappeared, and each night brought horrific shrieks from within the very walls themselves. Mister Harie sensed that no earthly solution existed. This was something ancient, something darker—a malevolence that had dwelt in this house for centuries. At last, he called for the priest.
2 The Ritual of the Cloth
The priest arrived on a cold winter morning, bearing his books, his crucifix, and a resolve stronger than any fear. His face was grim as he walked through the house. He spoke prayers aloud, incensed every room with sacred smoke, and recited words in Latin that thundered through the halls like divine proclamation. The spirit responded with fury: walls trembled, windows bowed under invisible pressure, and the sound of rage swelled to unbearable heights.
Then the priest commanded everyone into the living room. He placed a white cloth upon the wooden table, smooth and pristine. With clenched fists, he cried out with undeniable authority: “Reveal yourself! Show your form! You are not welcome in this house of God!” The air turned ice-cold. The candle extinguished, and darkness consumed them all.
3 The Mark of Evil
When light returned, all present sensed a terrible manifestation taking shape. Slowly, against all resistance, something appeared above the white cloth—a hand, black as charcoal, writhing with shadow. The hand descended upon the linen and left an imprint—clear, permanent, indelible. The spirit shrieked in a cry of utterly lost despair, and then—silence. Absolute, perfect silence.
The priest carefully lifted the cloth and held it before them. There, upon the white linen, was the mark of the evil spirit—black as the darkest night. With this proof in hand, the priest pronounced the formal words of banishment. The ghost departed forever from the house. The cloth bearing the black handprint was preserved with care as evidence of the supernatural, and the house beside the church knew peace at last. Mister Harie and his family could finally sleep in tranquility.
