The Bremen Roland
The Bremen Roland has stood since 1404 on the Marktplatz at Bremen, 5.5 m tall, sword raised. Symbol of the city freedom granted by Charlemagne in 787. UNESCO heritage since 2004. Bremeners say: while Roland stands, Bremen stays free.
1 The freedom
787. Charlemagne visited Bremen to Christianise the Saxons. He granted the city market right, customs exemption, own jurisdiction. The charter is lost; Bremen tradition holds 787 as «day of freedom». In 1366 the Bremeners set up a wooden Roland statue on the market, as symbol of the freedom Charles had given. Roland was Charles’ nephew and paladin, fallen at Roncevaux 778. The Bremen Roland carried Charles’ sword and the imperial arms.
