The Devil and the Card Game
In a house in Heppeneert, some farmers were playing cards. Suddenly, a stranger came in and asked if he could play. Shortly after, all the hearts mysteriously disappeared from the deck.
1 The Devilish Guest
When one of the farmers looked down at the ground, he saw that the stranger wore no shoes and instead of feet had two horse legs with horseshoes. The man quickly made the sign of the cross, upon which the stranger flew through the wall and left a great fire behind.
2 The Pact
Later, the devil appeared to a drunkard who enjoyed playing cards. The devil offered the drunkard twenty years of prosperity in exchange for his soul. The drunkard agreed but continued to pray to Saint Gertrude. When his time was up, the drunkard went to the bridge where the devil was waiting for him. Because the drunkard was accompanied by Saint Gertrude, the devil could do nothing to him. The man repented and died a Christian death.
