The Witch and the Little Lamb
A farmer was tending the oxen in the field, while his two daughters had to tend the cattle. In a nearby field walked a woman from the village, of whom it was said that she was a witch.
1 The Apparition in the Field
A farmer was tending the oxen in the field, while his two daughters had to tend the cattle. In a nearby field walked a woman from the village, of whom it was said that she was a witch. When a girl went to fetch one of the cattle from the witch’s field, she was terrified to see an animal that looked like a goat with its horns close to the ground. Behind the animal rolled something that looked like a piece of butter.
2 The Girls’ Fear
The girls ran home in fear. Their father believed that the witch was responsible for the children’s terror and called for the priest to bless the house. This was a common means of defending against witchcraft.
3 The Strange Lamb
In winter the farmer had tied a lamb in the shed. But during the night the lamb had broken free and stood bleating beside the farmer’s bed. The farmer chased the animal away and locked it in the kitchen.
4 The Mysterious Return
The next morning he found that the lamb was still tied in the shed. This unexplainable occurrence suggested that the lamb had been moved to a different place by supernatural forces.
