The Smith of Jüterbog
The Brandenburg smith Tilemann of Jüterbog received in 1455 from a disguised Saint Peter three wishes. He wished: whoever sat on his anvil could not leave; whoever sat on his chair could not leave; whoever climbed in his orchard could not leave. When Death came three generations later, Tilemann caught him.
1 The three wishes
1455. Tilemann (32), smith on the Markt at Jüterbog, received one September evening an old pilgrim with a crooked foot. He gave him bread and beer without asking money. The pilgrim: «Tilemann, I am Saint Peter. Three wishes.» Tilemann thought. One — whoever sits on my anvil stays till I free him. Two — whoever sits on my work-chair stays till I free him. Three — whoever climbs in my orchard stays till I free him. Peter: «Strange. No soul-salvation? No riches?» Tilemann: «The rest comes with hard work.» Peter bowed.
